Living in Chico is a dream for those who love the outdoors. Winters are generally mild with lows dipping into the 20s during the coldest months. In the summer, highs can reach the low-100s. No matter the time of year, there is always something to get you outside.
Spanning 3,670 acres, Bidwell Park is one of the largest city parks in the country. The park features miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. There are several swimming holes, a disc golf course, a nature center, and an observatory. Big Chico Creek Canyon runs for five miles through the park, offering breathtaking views.
Fed by the Feather River, Lake Oroville is the second largest reservoir in California. Just a 40-minute drive from Chico, the lake is a popular destination for boating, swimming, and water skiing. The lake is stocked with coho salmon from the Feather River Fish hatchery, and is nationally renowned for bass fishing. The area surrounding the lake is filled with recreational opportunities including camping, and hiking to the amazing Feather Falls — the sixth tallest waterfall in the United States.
Originating in the mountains of northern California and running nearly 400 miles south to the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta and San Francisco Bay, the Sacramento River is the largest river in the state. Flowing just a short drive east of Chico, the river is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Chicoans escape the heat of summer by floating down the river in canoes, kayaks, or inner tubes, and anglers fish for salmon and steelhead. Birdwatchers will find osprey, eagles, hawks, and more. After a day of exploring, grab a bite to eat at a riverside cafe, or one of the picnic spots that line the banks.
CARD (Chico Area Recreation and Park District) provides programs and activities for residents of all ages, including:
